Minstrel 23
The Minstrel 23 is a David Thomas design based off his original 1979 plan for the Liberty 22. He penned it for Hunter Boats (the British company, not Hunter Marine of the US), drawing inspiration from the traditional British Navy Montagu Whalers and the unstayed masts of Gary Hoyt’s Freedom line of yachts.
Hunter Boats built thirty of the Minstrels in the late-1980s, using the same molds as the Liberty 22 and Liberty 23. Unlike the cat-ketch Libertys, the Minstrel 23 is a gaff-rigged sloop with 200 square feet of sail area.
Although the Minstrel has a mast support below that obstructs the cabin, there is still a fair-sized cabin for this length of vessel. Typically, there is a double or two single berths, quarter berth, galley, and head.
There is an active Hunter Liberty Minstrel Owners Association in the UK with most of the boats having found homes in their native waters.
